What to wear- photography guide

you’ve finally booked your photo session…now what?

One of the most common questions I get asked as asked before a session is, “What should we wear?” And I totally get it- choosing outfits for photos can feel a little overwhelming. But don’t worry! I’m here to guide you through it so your images turn out beautiful, timeless and true to you.

When you book a session with me, you’ll have access to my client closet and personalized styling guidance! For both maternity and newborn sessions, you’re welcome to choose two different outfits.

Every photoshoot you book with me is all about capturing the love and connection you share- that’s always my top priority! Choosing outfits that complement my editing style will take your images to the next level. This clothing guide is for everyone- even the men and children. By following it, you’re sure to look and feel your best while creating timeless images that align beautifully with me style- helping us capture your story in the most natural and elevated way.

Keep it Simple and Neutral

My photography style is warm, natural, and true to life. That’s why I always recommend earth tones tones for your session- think soft whites, creams, beiges, tans, muted olives, blushes (yes, I said blush) and grays. These colors not only complement every skin tone but also photograph beautifully in any setting. Whether we’re indoors with your newborn or outside during golden hour with your family, neutral tones keep the focus on what really matters- your connection, emotion, and story.

Why Neutrals Work So Well

  • They don’t compete with your surroundings: Bold patterns and loud colors can distract from the natural beauty of your session.
  • They bring a sense of calm: Soft, earthy tones create a peaceful, cozy feel that enhances the emotional tone of your photos.

Outfit Tips by Session Type:

Newborn Sessions

Keep it soft and cozy. Flowy dresses for mom and solid neutral tees or henley’s for dad work great. For baby, a simple onesie is perfect- less is more when it comes to highlighting your tiny new arrival. I also have a client closet for both mom (sizes S-XL) and baby.

Maternity Sessions

Embrace your glow! For maternity sessions your allowed two different looks! So I usually recommend a dress for look #1 and then jeans paired with a cute bralette and button down for look #2 to show off your  growing bump. Partners can wear complementary tones- a light button down or sweater with chinos or jeans always looks great.

Family Sessions

Coordinate, don’t match (it’s so 2002!) I always recommend starting with mom’s outfit and build from there. Mix textures and tones within the same color family. Avoid busy patterns or logos and aim for outfits that allow everyone to move and snuggle. Choose a color palette with 2-3 complementing shades and mix in different textures (like knits, linen, or lace) to add depth and interest.

I can’t wait to start planning your session together! Please feel free to send me pictures of outfits your considering, I’m happy to help with the styling process! <3
